Hiring the first five is a different job from hiring the next fifty
Building a customer experience team is a series of decisions you make once and live with for years. What the first hire actually does, whether you want generalists or specialists, what goes in the job description, and how you tell in an interview whether someone can handle an angry customer at four on a Friday.
The mentors here have built teams from nothing and inherited ones that were already broken. Several have hired across time zones and through outsourcing partners. They will tell you what they got wrong, which is usually the more useful half of the conversation.
Bring the real constraint: a headcount request that keeps getting deferred, a scorecard you do not trust, an offer you are about to make and are not sure about, a team that doubled and stopped working. Most people use a first call to pressure test a decision they have already half made.
If you are hiring your first support person and have never done it before, say so when you book. Several of these mentors have written the job description you are about to write.
What a building a team mentor helps with
- Writing a job description that filters for the work, not the keywords
- Interview questions and scorecards that predict how someone handles a hard customer
- Deciding between generalists, specialists and a first team lead
- Building a case for headcount your finance team will approve
- Onboarding a new hire to productive in weeks rather than months
- Hiring across time zones, and what changes when you do

Questions people ask before booking
Is the first call really free?
Yes. One 30 minute call with any mentor, no card and no trial to cancel. Membership after that is one price for unlimited calls.
I am hiring one person, not building a department. Is this still for me?
Yes, and it is the more common case here. The first hire is the hardest one to undo, so it is worth 30 minutes with someone who has already made it.
Can a mentor look at my job description or scorecard?
Most will. Send it in the booking notes so they can read it before the call rather than spending the first ten minutes catching up.
Do these mentors recruit, or help me recruit?
They help you recruit. Mentors CX is not a recruiting agency and nobody on this page is paid to place a candidate with you.
